In-School Medication

To support access to education and attendance, prescribed medication is administered during the school day to pupils and, if your child is in residence, administered during their time in residence of an evening and morning too. 

All medication must be brought into school in the original box or container with a pharmacy label clearly detailing the pupils name, date of birth, dosage and date the medication is prescribed. 

You will need to complete an authorisation form (in Key Documents below) for staff to be able to administer medication on your behalf.  This is then authorised by the Headteacher prior to administration.

We cannot administer medication that is not prescribed by a doctor/pharmacy but we do have paracetamol in both tablet and liquid form should your child need pain relief during the day/evening with your consent.  Your child will receive a paracetamol medication slip detailing what has been administered and the date and time so that you can continue to give pain relief, if needed, later in the day/evening.  If your child needs pain relief in the morning, we will always ring you to check that they haven’t had any pain relief at home before leaving for school.

All prescribed medication is on an electronic administration system which relevant staff are trained to use.  An eMAR (electronic medication administration record) is produced every 28 days for your child for the staff to be able to record accurate administration and stock levels whilst your child is in school.  When stock needs to be replenished by the parent/carer, a text message or letter will be sent home.  Parents/Carers are responsible for ensuring that an adult brings the medication into school.  Pupils should not have medication on them or in their bags. 

If your child is unwell during the school day, we will contact you or an emergency contact you have provided, to collect them.

It is the parents/carers’ responsibility to inform the school of any changes to medication, dosages or times. 

Residential Pupils

All residential pupils will need enough medication for each half term.  A letter will be sent home at the end of each half term, detailing the stock needed for when they return to school the following half term. 

School Immunisation Team

The School Age Immunisation Service in Suffolk is run by Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust’s Children and Young People’s Health Services teams. 

When immunisations are held in school, you will receive an email from the school with a link to an online consent form.
